What is Digital Cable
Set top box?
Set Top Box is a gadget that translates digital satellite to TV sets.
Installation of STB has been made compulsory by the government. This has been
done keeping in mind the powerlessness of the government as they could not
control the subscriber base and the revenue via Cable operators. Thus, the
government of India introduced “The Cable Television Networks Amendment Act” in
2011.
Issues with Analogue Cable:
-
No control over LCOs i.e Local
Cable Operators under-reporting the subscriber base and hence less revenues
-
Low quality audio and video
services
-
MSOs cannot provide services like
Shopping, gaming, etc like the DTH operators can
-
Analog signal transmission takes
up too much bandwidth and with the current
situation, the LCOs cannot provide more than 100 Television Channels
How Digitization helps Cable Television Operators:
-
Compressed signals need lesser bandwidth so cable
operators can offer more Television Channels
-
Cable Television Operators can give tough competition
to DTH providers
-
More additional services like HD channels, gaming
options are possible
-
Digitization helps in increasing revenues by enabling
the MSOs and LCOs to offer add-on services like broadband, gaming, movies on
demand etc.
How Digitization helps Cable Television Consumers:
-
Better television channel packages are available
-
Competitive rates leading to better deals from various
cable operators
-
HD channels, teleshopping, games, kid’s entertainment
available
-
Some operators provide the option of recording your
favourite shows and movies, so you could watch it later at your convenience
-
The signals are stronger and are not affected by the
weather changes
-
Better Customer care service as everything is
customized as per your customer ID
With these many
benefits, switching to the Digital Cable Set top box
would be a no brainer. The digitization is a win-win situation for all!
